Eat the Rainbow: Part III

As we’re in the middle of the holiday season, it seems only fitting that Week 3 of the Rainbow Series is dedicated to the color red.

Red foods contain antioxidants like lycopene and anthocyanins, which are known to reduce inflammation and promote a healthy heart. Red fruits, such as watermelon and tomato, are excellent sources of lycopene, promoting not only a healthy body, but glowing skin as well. Lycopene has promotes heart health, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke, and red foods have been shown to improve digestion and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Red fruits and vegetables are one of the easiest foods to sneak into your daily diet. Strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, and apple delicious eaten solo, or if you prefer, smoothies and fresh fruit salads are another alternative. Tomatoes, peppers and red onion add flavor and pizazz to any meal, so get red and get creative!
