Staying Healthy Through Holiday Travel

Today Eat Clean Health has a guest post from food and travel blogger, Cole Millen. Cole was kind enough to share tips and tricks that can help you navigate through the perils of holiday eating and travel.

Staying Healthy Through Holiday Travel

Although you may have to travel and deal with the inconvenience that comes with the airport, there are many things that you can do to keep from having to indulge in the less than healthy food options that are available there. Below are just a few ways that you can stick to your diet and remain as healthy as possible throughout your trip.

Be sure to check the cleanliness of the water in the cities you will be traveling to.

The single most important aspect of nutrition is the cleanliness of the water that you are putting into your body. Your body is comprised of a majority of water and all of the nutrition that flows through your body is aided by water. Water also helps to clean your body of toxins, but only if it is clean itself.

You can check the quality of water on the state websites very easily including the amount of fluoridation that takes place within the state as well as the other toxins that have been found. You can then make an informed decision.

Bring food.   Airport-travel

Be careful about this as many airlines are now using government regulations to justify clamping down on people who want to bring food on board as well. Know the rules of your chosen airline before you go to the airport and pick an airline that lets you bring your own food if this is at all possible.

Eat your food in a healthy way.

It is natural to feel rushed inside of an airport; however, keep in mind that the way you eat your food may have an effect on the health of that meal as well as the actual food. Take your time, chew slowly and give yourself time to digest your food in a stress free environment. If at all possible, do it away from computers and TVs in the main lobbies; the high frequency waves that permeate these areas may actually inhibit your ability to digest food. This is what the investment in the airport clubs is actually good for.

Know how to avoid the worst foods.

In airports, there will be plenty of food that is usually only sold in the impulse line of the grocery store. Foods such as cinnamon rolls, candy bars and soft drinks will look incredibly good when you are just getting off of a stressful flight. However, you must discipline yourself to look a little bit harder for the more healthy foods that are sure to be in the airport somewhere. Ask the workers if they know – the best places might not be behind your gate. If you have enough time, take the Tram and make the move. Your body will certainly thank you in the long run.

Slim Down for Summer Smoothies

Summer is here! And just like the New Year, the bikini-baring weather of summertime brings a renewed commitment to slimming down, looking great, and getting healthy.  If your get-ready-for-summer plan includes shedding a few pounds of winter weight, incorporate the two summer smoothie recipes below to help to help you look and feel your sexiest!

When losing weight, always focus your efforts on properly fueling your body instead of relying on supplements, meal replacement bars, or processed shakes. Get healthy and slim by focusing your meals on WHOLE FOODS that nourish and energize you. Detoxing your body this way is the absolute best ways to slim down, reboot the digestive system and jump-start your health goals.

To get your body ready for summer, here are 2 of my favorite summer smoothies:                                                                     Florida-Blueberry-Smoothie-2

Blueberry-Cinnamon Smoothie

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen

1 Tablespoon chia seeds

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

1 handful kale

1 Tablespoon raw, organic honey or stevia to taste (optional)

Directions: Add all ingredients to food processor, blend until smooth and drink up!

Refreshing Watermelon-Mint Smoothie

2 cups chopped watermelon91682308

Handful of fresh mint leaves

2 cups strawberries

1/4 cup fresh parsley

Directions: Add all ingredients to food processor, blend until smooth and enjoy!

Whether you want to lose weight, increase energy, reduce cravings, or improve skin tone, each of these smoothies, found in Eat Clean Health’s WHOLE FOODS detox program, has been specifically designed to help you feel great, boost metabolism, and burn fat.

Juice Plus: The Importance of Antioxidants

When it comes to nutrition and health, conflicting ideas and advice abound. It’s hard to drown out the noise and tune in to what your body needs, but there is one area in which no debate is found: The importance of antioxidants.vegandfruits

Antioxidants, found in fruits and vegetables, strengthen the body, boost the immune system, and help prevent disease. Everyday our bodies are subjected to free radicals, which strain and age the body. When the body has more free radicals than antioxidants, oxidative stress occurs, causing numerous health problems, including cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, depression, thyroid issues, and diabetes, just to name a few.

Fruits and vegetables contain literally thousands of antioxidants, making them far and away the absolute best source of antioxidant health. The current recommendation is 7-13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, but unfortunately the average adult doesn’t come near those numbers. Putting the healthiest foods into our bodies is a daily struggle, which is why I recommend Juice Plus+ to those in need of extra support.

Juice Plus+ provides whole food nutrition from 17 different fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Unlike vitamin supplements, Juice Plus+ contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, and fiber, making it a wonderful addition to a healthy, balanced diet. There is absolutely no substitute for eating fresh fruits and vegetables, but if you find yourself struggling to eat healthy, fresh food consistently, Juice Plus+ provides an array of antioxidants to help ‘fill the gap’ between what you should eat and what you do eat.

Smart Alternatives to Energy Drinks

ABC News reported that 20,000 people ended up in the ER last year with energy drink related problems.  As a reformed Red Bull drinker, I highly recommend NEVER consuming energy drinks, no matter how sluggish you feel. Reach for one of these healthier forms of liquid energy instead.

Beverages:

  • Coconut Water: Loaded with potassium, magnesium, and calcium, coconut water helps boost energy levels and increase metabolism in the human body.
  • Coffee: Though coffee also has negative sides when over-consumed, studies have shown that a little caffeine before a workout (100 milligrams or so) can give you a boost. Aim for one cup of fresh brewed coffee 30 minutes before your workout. Some green tea in Nanzenji's lovely tea room.
  • Green Tea: High in antioxidants, daily consumption of green tea boosts endurance, helps burn body fat, and hydrates the body, despite the caffeine.

As a healthy alternative to energy drinks, the body healthy benefits of plain ol’ water are numerous:

Water:

  • Improves Energy Levels
  • Halts Hunger
  • Increases Metabolic Rate
  • Enhances Performance
  • Energizes Muscles
  • Flushes Toxins from Body

Aim for an average of 8-10 cups of water per day, though individual needs vary depending on physical activity, environment, and diet. If flat water is too bland for you, drink sparkling water. Add slices of lemon, lime, cucumber, or fresh berries to add flavor and fun to your sparkling water. These additives also work great in flat water as well. Drink up and stay healthy!
